Design system · v1.1 · 2026
Quiet type,
one loud sky.
A small, token-driven system for editorial sites and web apps. Restraint in the components; the gradient behind them does the talking.
01 — Explore
- FoundationsThe decisions everything else is built on: type, color, space, layout, surfaces, motion and icons. Each one is a set of tokens in
css/tokens.css.7 pages - ComponentsEvery component in Jewel, one page each, with live examples, copy-paste code, usage notes and accessibility notes. Each is one CSS file, and a script only where CSS can’t do the job.38 pages
- PatternsComponents put together to do a job: fill in a form, post a photo, browse a photo wall, read a report, lay out a project.5 pages
02 — Get started
1. Link the stylesheet and the core script
Copy the css and js folders into your site. Link one stylesheet; it pulls in everything else. Add a component’s script only if you use that component.
2. Start from the page frame
The background, the cap, the header and a column of content panels. See Layout and grid.
3. Copy components from these pages
Every example has its code underneath, with a Copy button. Change tokens in your own stylesheet, after jewel.css, rather than editing the system.
03 — Principles
What Jewel stands for
- Restraint. Hairlines, one typeface, almost no shadow. The gradient is the only loud thing.
- Tokens first. Components read colors, sizes and timings from tokens, never raw values.
- Readable everywhere. Every text color meets WCAG AA on glass and on solid; every control is 44px to touch.
- HTML first. Native elements, no framework and no build step. Scripts add behavior; the content works without them.
